The Wisconsin Department of Justice (DOJ), along with the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) and 19 other states, has filed a lawsuit against Dollar General Corporation. The suit alleges that the retailer engages in deceptive pricing practices by charging customers higher prices at checkout than those listed on store shelves, price tags, and advertisements, resulting in millions of dollars in overcharges for consumers.
According to the complaint, Dollar General has repeatedly mislabeled prices and overcharged consumers over several years despite widespread internal knowledge of the issue. Thousands of stores allegedly extracted millions of dollars in unlawful overcharges while lacking sufficient safeguards to prevent these errors. Furthermore, despite receiving tens of thousands of customer complaints, the company failed to implement adequate corrective policies.
The FTC alleges that these practices violate the FTC Act and the Gramm-Leach-Bliley Act, while Wisconsin asserts violations of state consumer protection and weights and measures statutes. Enforcement actions rely heavily on inspections conducted by state and municipal inspectors as well as consumer reports. Consumers wishing to file a weights and measures complaint can do so by visiting datcp.wi.gov, emailing DATCPWeightsAndMeasures@wisconsin.gov, or calling (608) 224-4942.
