High School football plays first games this week. Packers take on Denver. Doe tags are on sale now for deer season.

WISCONSIN RAPIDS, Wis. (WFHR / WIRI) – The High School football season is underway with the first games of the regular season being played this week.
On Thursday, August 20, Wisconsin Rapids and Port Edwards will be in action with the Red Raiders playing in Hudson, while the Blackhawks will take on Green Lake/Princeton.
The Port game will be played at Woodtrust Bank Field at South Wood County Stadium and will be featured on AM 1320 WFHR with pregame beginning at 6:50 p.m. with Mike Kommer and Randy Pahl on the call.
On Friday, Aug. 21, the Assumption and Nekoosa squads will open the season with both teams being home.
The Royals will host Rosholt at 7:00 p.m. at WoodTrust Bank Field at South Wood County Stadium, while Nekoosa hosts Crandon at the Nekoosa Sports Complex at 7:00 p.m.
The Papermaker game will be featured on AM 1320 WFHR with a pregame of 6:50 p.m. with Mike Kommer and Randy Pahl on the call.
Packers play in Denver
After dropping its preseason opener, the Green Bay Packers get back to action on Friday, August 21 when they play the Denver Broncos at 8:00 p.m.
The last time the Packers and Broncos played in the preseason was in 2024.
Green Bay fell to Pittsburgh 28-9, while Denver knocked off Atlanta 27-7.
Doe tags on sale now
Hunting season is just around the corner. The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources begins the sale of antlerless permits for hunters on a first-come, first-served basis.
Harvest authorizations are sold at a cost of $12. They can be sold one per day until gone for management zone specific units.
Sales began on Monday, August 17 with Northern and Central Forest Zones. Next will be Central Farmland and Southern Farmland before being open state-wide on Thursday, Aug. 20.
