VFW offers dedicated patriotic scholarship programs
The Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) offers dedicated patriotic scholarship programs designed to encourage and invest in middle and high school students across the nation. Through the Voice of Democracy audio-essay contest, students in grades nine through 12 compete for a share of more than $1.6 million in educational awards, including a top national college scholarship of $35,000. For middle school students in grades six through eight, the Patriot’s Pen written essay contest awards more than $1 million annually, featuring a $5,000 national first-place prize.
Students in public, private, or home schools across Richland Center, Kickapoo, and Ithaca are encouraged by the Bower-Gunnill-Dalton VFW Post 2267 to submit their entries for the 2026-2027 competition cycle. Participants must prepare their essays based on this year’s theme, "What a Veteran Taught Me About America." All completed application forms and submissions must be turned in to their sponsoring local VFW Post by midnight on October 31.
