Richland County Health and Human Services, alongside the Wisconsin Department of Health Services, has officially confirmed a case of measles within Richland County. Public health authorities are actively conducting contact tracing to identify and directly notify individuals who may have been exposed to the virus.

Measles is an extremely contagious airborne disease that can linger in the air for up to two hours after an infected person coughs or sneezes. It carries the risk of severe health complications, including pneumonia, brain damage, and deafness, and can be fatal in severe cases. Those who are unvaccinated or unsure of their immunization status face the highest risk. Residents experiencing potential symptoms are instructed to stay home and call their healthcare provider prior to visiting a clinic to prevent further transmission.

Health officials emphasize that the most effective protection against the disease is the measles, mumps, and rubella (MMR) vaccine. Two doses are recommended for children, with the first administered between 12 and 15 months and the second between 4 and 6 years of age. Adults without proven immunity are advised to receive at least one dose, while individuals born before 1957 are generally considered immune. Additional updates regarding the ongoing investigation are being published on the Wisconsin Department of Health Services webpage and the Richland County news portal.
