The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources is reminding motorists across the state to obey the "Move Over" law, which requires drivers to slow down and shift lanes when approaching stopped emergency vehicles and roadside crews. Originally enacted in 2001, this critical legislation formed the centerpiece of National Move Over Day, which was Saturday, October 17, offering crucial protection to law enforcement, first responders, and highway workers operating near active traffic.

Safety restrictions also apply off the main highway, with specific rules governing ATV and UTV operation near non-riders. Administrative code limits machine speeds to no more than 10 mph within 100 feet of pedestrians, snowmobilers, or motorcyclists. Similarly, state statutes prohibit riding an ATV or UTV faster than 10 mph on frozen public waters or trails when within 100 feet of bystanders, including hikers, equestrians, stopped vehicles, conservation wardens, and maintenance crews.

DNR Off-Highway Vehicle Administrator Lt. Jacob Holsclaw emphasizes that reducing speed and providing ample space not only promotes safety, but also fosters a positive image for the off-roading community. He adds that extending extra courtesy to DNR wardens, first responders, tow operators, and trail workers helps mitigate the inherent dangers of working in these environments.

To ensure a safe riding experience, operators are urged to remain completely sober, wear protective gear including helmets and eye protection at all times, and strictly follow posted speed limits and trail signs. Riders on public routes should keep headlights turned on, travel on the extreme right side of the lane, and complete an ATV safety course regardless of age requirements.
