The final group of Soldiers assigned to the 1st Battalion, 121st Field Artillery Regiment, Wisconsin Army National Guard, will be formally recognized as they return home to Wisconsin following a nearly yearlong mobilization within the U.S. Central Command area of responsibility. A homecoming event is scheduled for today, at 1 p.m. at the Appleton Flight Center.

Headquartered in Oak Creek, Wisconsin, the 1-121st FAR includes Battery A in Hartford, Battery B in Two Rivers, and the 108th Forward Support Company in Sussex. As a unit of the 157th Maneuver Enhancement Brigade based in Milwaukee, the battalion has continuously modernized its capabilities, transitioning over the years from the M109 howitzer to the M270 Multiple Launch Rocket System in 2003, and deploying with the M142 High Mobility Artillery Rocket System (HIMARS) since 2010.

The regiment traces its lineage to the establishment of Milwaukee's first artillery battery on May 11, 1885. Originally consisting of just 65 artillerymen, the unit expanded and was officially redesignated as the 121st Field Artillery Regiment on Sept. 19, 1917, ahead of its service in World War I. Over the past century, elements of the 121st FAR have answered the call to duty during World War II, the Global War on Terror, and numerous domestic relief and security operations across Wisconsin.
