A group of U.S. Senators led by Tammy Baldwin of Wisconsin has issued a formal warning to Department of Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin, demanding an immediate halt to actions that threaten to undermine public trust and state authority in the 2026 midterm elections. The lawmakers expressed grave concerns over unsubstantiated allegations of noncitizen voter registration, threats to deploy federal law enforcement agents to polling places, and pressure placed on states to release sensitive voter roll data through flawed federal databases.

In addition to challenging the administration's rhetoric, the Senators criticized new political conditions attached to Federal Emergency Management Agency security grants, arguing that withholding essential funding risks community safety as political leverage. They also highlighted serious allegations from a federal whistleblower regarding an improper "Unlawful Voter Initiative" within U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services. Calling for full transparency, the Senators demanded that DHS immediately release withheld funds, provide supporting evidence for its voter claims, and cease all initiatives aimed at improperly accessing state voter information.
