During my Those Were the Days radio show Saturday night, you will be able to visit addresses that have been addressed in song. Perhaps a trip to Baker, Love, or Alphabet Street. A journey to Penny or Primrose Lane. A visit to Tobacco, 7 Bridges, Copperhead, or Allison Road might be fun as well. I hope you will join me as we put a few rock and roll addresses into the G.P.S. (golden playlist songs?)
All of the songs about places that seemed exotic made me restless when I was a ‘wee Nee’. Growing up on the farm, I was never able to take much of a vacation with the family. Looking back, I am pretty sure my dad went years without taking a milking off. Three of my uncles lived in Boaz. One summer I spent a couple of days at Uncle Frank’s, two more at Uncle Ed’s, and capped off my vacation at Uncle Leo’s. Ed owned Stafford’s Supper Club. I was spoiled there with sizzler steaks, tater tots, and chocolate milk for supper. Cousin Joyce took me to La Crosse and we bought records! When I went back home, I was very sad because I missed the city lights of the exotic village of Boaz. My sister took me to Dubuque, Iowa when I was in high school and that was the first time I was ever out of the Badger State. Crossing the Bridge into the Key City seemed as grand as the Golden Gate Bridge heading into San Francisco. I saw billboards about businesses I had heard about while listening to D-93 (later Kat-FM) KFMD radio. ‘Tired of Toeing the Line” by Rocky Burnette was the hottest record on the radio. It was the summer of 1980. So many of my fondest memories come back vividly when I hear certain songs.
It will be great to be in the studio to take your calls Saturday night. It was nice to get away with family for an up ‘nort’ vacation, but it is always nice to be back with my family in radio land. During Those Were the Days not only will we be playing trivia, and taking requests, and taking you to a few musical addresses, but we will pay tribute to Freddy ‘Boom Boom’ Cannon. We lost Freddy recently at the age of 89. He was an occasional phone guest on the show over the course of our nearly 40 years. His song ‘Action’ is on my Wurlitzer jukebox at home and Palisades Park has been requested many times.
