DNR Warns of Unhealthy Air as Wildfire Smoke Spreads Across Wisconsin
MADISON, Wis – (Civic Media) – Wildfire smoke is expected to bring poor air quality across Wisconsin through at least Thursday, prompting a statewide advisory from the Department of Natural Resources. Officials say fine particle pollution levels could range from “unhealthy for sensitive groups” to “very unhealthy,” with brief periods reaching hazardous levels in some areas.
The advisory began at noon Tuesday and is set to continue until noon Thursday, though it could be extended. Smoke from wildfires in Minnesota and Ontario is expected to move into northern Wisconsin tonight, then spread south across the state by Wednesday and early Thursday. Heavier smoke is likely in northwest Wisconsin and near Lake Michigan.
Health officials warn that children, older adults and people with asthma or heart disease should avoid outdoor activity during periods of very unhealthy air. Others are advised to limit time outside and watch for symptoms such as coughing or shortness of breath.
People are encouraged to stay indoors when possible and monitor air quality updates as conditions change.
