Apple Emergency SOS Notification Leads to Large Multi-Agency Response in Rural Iowa County, proves to be false alarm
Apple Emergency SOS Notification Leads to Large Multi-Agency Response in Rural Iowa County, in the Town of Eden. On Friday afternoon (July 10) the Iowa County Sheriff’s Office received an emergency notification through Apple’s Emergency SOS/Health system indicating that the owner of a cellular phone had suffered a traumatic injury and was experiencing difficulty breathing. The notification also provided GPS coordinates for the device, allowing emergency responders to begin coordinating a response immediately.Based on the limited information available and the remote location of the emergency, the Iowa County Communications Center coordinated a large-scale response. Initial information suggested responders could be dealing with a critically injured patient in heavily wooded, steep terrain where access would be difficult and rescue operations could be prolonged. Additionally, warm weather conditions increased concerns for both the reported patient and responding personnel operating in the rugged terrain.
Due to the reported traumatic injuries, difficult terrain, and the potential for an extended rescue operation, numerous emergency resources were dispatched, including placing UW Med Flight on standby while responders worked to locate the individual. As responding personnel made their way toward the reported location, they were able to establish contact with the individual. It was ultimately determined that the emergency notification had been activated unintentionally and that no traumatic injuries or medical emergency existed. The Iowa County Communications Center and responding agencies acted on the information provided through the Apple Emergency SOS/Health notification, which indicated the individual had sustained a traumatic injury and was experiencing difficulty breathing. At this time, it remains unknown why that information was relayed through the emergency notification. No medical treatment or transport was required. While this incident ultimately had a positive outcome, it serves as a reminder of how valuable modern emergency technology can be. The Apple Emergency SOS and Health features provided responders with critical location information and details about the reported emergency, allowing emergency services to quickly mobilize resources for what was believed to be a life-threatening incident.
