Vernon County Sheriff Roy Torgerson released an overview of department activities for the week ending June 13, 2026, highlighting a period defined by both critical public safety responses and proactive community assistance. The department addressed a diverse array of incidents ranging from investigative cases to storm recovery efforts across the region.

The week saw deputies engaging in essential community support roles. In the Town of Harmony, a potentially dangerous situation on the roadway was averted near County Road OK and Wing Hollow Road when two loose horses were discovered. With the help of local residents, deputies successfully moved the animals to a secure pasture. Efforts to identify the owners are ongoing as community members assist in spreading the word. In the Village of Viola, deputies provided a helping hand to a local juvenile who requested assistance getting home. The youth was safely transported to their grandparents’ residence, and parents were promptly notified of the situation.

On the investigative front, the Sheriff’s Office is looking into several serious reports. A formal complaint was filed regarding threatening phone calls allegedly made by an inmate at the Vernon County jail and another individual. Meanwhile, in the Village of Readstown, a resident reported the theft of prescription medications from their home, prompting an active investigation. The department is also addressing a case of vandalism in the Town of Kickapoo, where a business reported that irrigation lines on their property had been intentionally cut. To prevent further incidents, the Sheriff’s Office has announced that extra patrols will be conducted in that area for the next two months.

The latter part of the week was marked by public safety challenges related to accidents and weather. On June 11, a UTV accident occurred on County Road EE in the Town of Greenwood after the vehicle struck a deer. The impact caused the UTV to overturn and come to rest on its side. Fortunately, the driver was wearing a seatbelt and was transported to Emplify Health in Hillsboro for medical evaluation. The incident has been reported to the DNR for further review. Additionally, following heavy storms, deputies spent significant time clearing downed trees and limbs that were blocking roadways throughout the county. Despite the widespread debris, the Sheriff’s Office reported that no injuries occurred during the storm or the subsequent cleanup efforts.
