MADISON, Wis. (CIVIC MEDIA) – The heat cranked up with breezy winds pushing us to temperatures 30 degrees above normal for early March.
This time of year temperatures typically barely climb above freezing and reach the mid to upper 30s across the state.
But this year, March 10th had history written on it.
Wisconsin soaked up the sun and enjoyed temperatures 30 to 40 degrees above normal. The state hit highs from the mid 60s to the low 70s. Not far away, in Nebraska and Iowa, 80s were reached.
RECORD HIGH TEMPS BROKEN:
La Crosse: 72° beat the old record of 67° set back in 1894.
Eau Claire: 69° tore the old record of 64° set back in 2012.
Madison and Milwaukee: 67° squeaked above old records.
Wausau: 66° destroyed the old record of 61°.
Green Bay: 66° eliminated the old 62° set in 1894.
Wisconsin Dells, Rhinelander and Appleton all reached 61° making history.
Winds pulling out of the south ushered in the unseasonable temperatures. Dry conditions paired with the warmth and winds, caused a high fire danger in western parts of the state though (yellow areas).
Dry, dead vegetation is in prime condition to spark a fire.
Burn bans are in place in most DNR areas.
Moderate risks for wildfires stretch east (blue) and a low risk remains far north (green).
A large grass fire was reported near Capital Drive and Brookfield on Sunday afternoon. The smoke could be seen for miles and the blaze evacuated homes.
