Jackie Robinson broke Major League Baseball’s “color line” when he played for the Brooklyn Dodgers in April of 1947. In March of 2025, Donald Trump and Pete Hegseth attempted to “erase” Jackie Robinson from the Department of Defense website. Earlier this week a story titled “Sports Heroes Who Served: Baseball Great Jackie Robinson Was WWII Soldier” suddenly disappeared from the DOD website. What then appeared was a URL labeled “deisports.” DEI sports. DEI. Get it?
This wasn’t the first article featuring an African-American hero that was suddenly erased from the DOD website. The Defense Department had, earlier this month, deleted a page dedicated to Medal of Honor winner Major General Charles Calvin Rodgers. It may not surprise you to find out that Major General Rodgers was also black. It, likewise, may not surprise you that the URL again had “DEI” in it.
After much anger and outcry both the Robinson and Rodgers pages were restored. Without an apology. If it was just these two examples it would be bad enough. However, Trump and Hegseth and their many bootlickers have been busy trying to erase anyone from color from American history in the first two months of the new administration. The current media landscape seems unable and unwilling to label this administration what it is: White Supremacist.
The words and actions of this administration, plus many of the actual people who work in it who have long records of racist beliefs tells the whole story yet the people who write and deliver the stories to you in many different forms of media refuse to plainly say it. This administration wants to erase every accomplishment of every person who isn’t white. Isn’t Christian. Isn’t straight. Isn’t what MAGA considers a “true American.” Headlines bend over backward to not say it: Trump and MAGA want to bring back the “good old days” of segregation. A good way to start is to deny that people of color, or different gender identities or sexual preferences ever did anything of historical note. This isn’t new. They have been working to change history textbooks to only information they find “acceptable.”
If you are reading this and saying “no, you are wrong”, tell me this: why was the Jackie Robinson story removed from the DOD website? Can you give me one reason other than Jackie Robinson was black? One? It is the basic definition of racism and white supremacism. When it happens it needs to be accurately pointed out. Not couched in softer language. President Joe Biden often said we are in a battle for America’s soul. The despicable actions of Trump and Hegseth in trying to erase the life and accomplishments of people like Jackie Robinson and Major General Charles Calvin Rodgers and the many others they have already erased is racist. Pure racist. Say it. Then do what you can to stop it.
