Two Wisconsin high school seniors have been selected as 2026 U.S. Presidential Scholars by the U.S. Department of Education
In a remarkable achievement highlighting academic excellence and dedication, two Wisconsin high school seniors have been selected as 2026 U.S. Presidential Scholars by the U.S. Department of Education. Joel Michael Janssen of Delavan-Darien High School and Elizabeth Jane Matz of Onalaska High School were named among just 161 seniors nationwide to receive one of the nation’s highest honors for high school students.
The U.S. Presidential Scholars Program recognizes students for exceptional accomplishments in academics, the arts, and career and technical education. Selection is rigorous: out of more than 6,700 qualified candidates across the country, honorees are chosen by the White House Commission on Presidential Scholars based on exam performance, artistic ability, essays, school recommendations, leadership, and community involvement.
Wisconsin State Superintendent Dr. Jill Underly praised Janssen and Matz, noting that the distinction reflects both their personal commitment and the surrounding network of educators, families, and local communities. She commended their hard work and curiosity, celebrating the accomplishment as a proud moment for Wisconsin schools.
