Transporting untreated firewood across county or state lines remains one of the primary vectors for spreading devastating forest pests and diseases, including the spongy moth, emerald ash borer, Asian longhorned beetle, and oak wilt fungus. By embracing the simple rule to "Buy Local, Burn Local," outdoor enthusiasts can play a vital role in preserving Wisconsin's diverse woodland canopy.

When wood is moved away from its harvest location, hidden insects and fungal spores can easily travel along and later emerge to infest healthy trees in previously untouched areas. To mitigate this threat, forestry officials and conservation campaigns like Don't Move Firewood advise campers and property owners to buy firewood directly at their destination or use certified heat-treated wood. Furthermore, visitors to state-managed lands are reminded that uncertified firewood brought from more than 10 miles away is strictly prohibited.
