Mayo Clinic Breaks Ground on Another Eau Claire Hospital Expansion

Mayo Clinic Health System officials gathered at their Eau Claire hospital site this week to break ground on another new expansion project.

The project will see the construction of a new six story, 180,000-square-foot facility where the current Amalia Building sits. The Amalia Building is also scheduled to be demolished by the Spring of 2027.

Mayo Clinic Health System officials say the project has been years in the making, and will primarily serve to expand the facility's surgical care capacity. They also say the project will provide their staff with the latest advancements in care and improve the healthcare experience for their patients throughout the Chippewa Valley.

When completed, the building will feature new pre- and post-operation rooms as well as another 30 hospital beds. Mayo Clinic Health System officials say they currently expect to open the new building in the Fall of 2029.

That new building also isn't the only construction project going on at the hospital site. Earlier this year, construction work began on a 10,000-square-foot expansion project in the emergency department. That expansion will see the introduction of new patient treatment areas with a centralized nursing station, advanced monitoring, and improvements for patient privacy.

The goal of the expansion projects is to minimize the additional stress placed on area emergency departments following the HSHS closures over two years ago. Mayo Clinic Health System will also get some outside help in pursuit of that goal with the full opening of the new Aspirus Health Hospital in Chippewa Falls on Tuesday. That project will restore emergency department access to local residents who had been forced to travel to Eau Claire or further for emergency care following the St. Joseph's Hospital closure.
