Crowley proposes repeal of mark-up law to reduce gas prices affected by Tiffany-supported war in Iran

Gas and diesel prices continue to soar. Earlier this week, Wisconsin set an all-time record for diesel costs at $6.11.
The main culprit of high gas prices? The war in Iran.
President Donald Trump’s costly and deadly war has resulted in roughly 20% of the global oil supply being cut off after Iran closed the Strait of Hormuz in response to military escalation and blockades by the U.S. and Israel.
Despite publicly claiming the war should end, Republican candidate for governor Tom Tiffany voted multiple times in Congress to extend the war effort.
On the other hand, Democratic nominee and Milwaukee County Executive David Crowley has been calling for a repeal of the minimum mark-up law on gas since June. The repeal would reduce gas costs by over $.40 cents per gallon and $.56 cents for diesel, Crowley said.
“Wisconsin families are struggling to pay their bills and Congressman Tom Tiffany’s making it harder for them to fill up their tanks—I know that because my family feels it firsthand too,” Crowley said in a statement. “It’s Wisconsin families, farmers, manufacturers, and truck drivers that are getting hit hard with these high diesel prices on top of the disastrous tariffs Tom Tiffany has supported. Congressman Tiffany has drained the pockets of working families while handing out tax breaks to billionaires. As governor, I’ll repeal the minimum gas markup, giving relief that working Wisconsinites desperately need.”
According to Politico, diesel prices have risen nearly 60% in the past 12 months. At the start of the year, Tiffany bragged that 2026 was “on track to be the cheapest year for gas since 2020.”
High gas and diesel costs aren’t the only things Tiffany is burdening Wisconsin’s families with — a new report shows Trump and Tiffany’s tariffs will cost $2,179 per Wisconsin household.
Between the war and new tariffs, fear across Wisconsin’s agriculture and manufacturing sectors is growing as profit margins decline and hopes for a prosperous season diminish.
Tiffany’s campaign didn’t respond to a request for comment.
