Tom Tiffany made the ‘wrong decision’ to skip GOP convention, Michael Alfonso says

Republican candidate for Wisconsin governor Tom Tiffany is skipping his party’s midterm convention in Texas, saying he is busy running a campaign.

The decision is viewed by some as a way to distance himself from unpopular national Republican politics led by President Donald Trump.

The move leaves one Republican candidate for Congress irked, according to audio obtained by the Milwaukee Courier.

“If they don’t come out to support the president, then why should we support them?” a voter asked Michael Alfonso at a convention event in Dallas on Tuesday.

“It’s a good question,” Alfonso said. “It’s too important this year to have hurt feelings. They’re making the wrong decision.”

Alfonso is seeking Tiffany’s congressional seat in northern Wisconsin. The 26-year-old has faced criticism within his own party for lack of experience and nepotism. His father-in-law is Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy, the former holder of the congressional seat.

Despite that, Alfonso won the Republican primary by 22 points.

Alfonso has tied himself to Trump for some time now and even accepted political contributions from people tied to Trump, like the contractor for the disastrous Reflecting Pool debacle in Washington, D.C.

Alfonso’s campaign didn’t immediately respond to a request for comment.

Tiffany’s campaign also didn’t respond to a request for comment. Earlier this week, he said he was “busy” campaigning across the state to travel to Texas.

“Starting right here in Milwaukee, we’re going to be covering the entire state,” he said. “We’re going to Madison, Wausau, Green Bay and all over the state of Wisconsin. We got meetings going on everywhere. So unfortunately I’ll not be able to attend.”
