Milwaukee police released footage of a fatal police shooting earlier this month.

The footage shows a tense standoff with back-and-forth negotiations where gunfire erupted multiple times before 22-year-old Jaylyn Brown was fatally struck by officers.

The shooting took place June 12 at an apartment building on the 8500 block of West Kaul Avenue.

Before officers arrived, police said Brown attempted an armed robbery and threatened to kill a person. Police found Brown walking around with a revolver before he arrived at the apartment complex.

Police released four short clips of the incident. The first clip appears to show one of the initial interactions with police at about 11:12 a.m.

“Can you just shoot me,” Brown is heard on bodycam audio. “I don’t want to shoot you,” the officer responds. Brown then asks to be shot multiple times before entering the building and retreating to the second floor common hallway.

About ten minutes later, video reveals the sound of a gunshot before officers rushed toward the door of the building.

Upon opening the door, officers throw flash bangs before one officer fires off two rounds toward Brown at the top of the stairs. The officer’s gun was pointed at an apartment door at the top of the stairs as well.

Police said no one was struck in this initial round of gunfire and a standoff ensued.

About an hour later, Brown agreed to retrieve a water and cigar from officers at the bottom of the stairs. But when he came down stairs, officers deployed a K9 and used a stun gun on Brown, who fled back upstairs and can be heard yelling.

At this point, the final video shows two officers exit from an apartment unit before one officer fatally shoots Brown, who the officer said was holding a gun.

The final video does not capture Brown, but in the aftermath, a gun can be seen lying on a stair near Brown in one video.

Seconds later, an officer said Brown was unresponsive and called for a medic. He was transported to a hospital, where he died.

Brown’s mother told the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel that she found issues with the way police handled the standoff. She said the fatal shooting occurred while her son was already on the ground and injured.

An outside agency, the Waukesha Police Department, is the lead agency in the investigation. The Milwaukee County District Attorney’s office will eventually make a charging decision.
