Racine, Wis (WRJN) – Preparations are underway for Racine’s 4th Fest. Organizers say this year marks the 90th annual parade, with the theme “Happy 250 America” as the nation heads toward its 250th birthday. The parade steps off at 9 a.m. from Goold Street and Main Street and will run about 2.6 miles south on Main Street, with pre-parade vehicles starting around 8:30 a.m.

The free event has been a Racine tradition since 1844, and organizers say the celebration is supported by donations, sponsorships and volunteers. This year’s lineup is expected to include marching bands, veterans’ groups, floats, balloons and returning entries, along with the University of Wisconsin Badger Band.

One of the best-known features is the Iwo Jima living memorial float, which has been part of the event since 1947. For the first time, female veterans will help portray the Marines in the scene, a change organizers say reflects both tradition and the need for more volunteers. Fireworks are planned for after dark off North Pier, with best viewing from North Beach and the lakefront.
