Wausau West hockey stays perfect with comeback win at 4th ranked Edgewood while CW Storm fight to a tie with Hayward.
On Saturday it was a battle between two of the top four teams in the state in high school hockey as 3rd ranked Wausau West travelled to 4th ranked and defending state champion Edgewood in a game broadcast live on 98.9 WXCO. After a pregame ceremony to present the 2025 state championship banner, the game lived up to the hype as West rallied with four third period goals to win 6-4 and stay unbeaten on the season.
The Warriors came out flying as Chase Crass scored just :39 into the game to give West the lead. The Warriors then made it 2-0 just 2:21 in as Cooper DePuydt would light the lamp. DePuydt nearly made it 3-0 shortly after but a shot banged off the post. Then it was Edgewood and their star forward Owen Porter that would take over. Porter cut the West lead in half with a goal at 8:07 of the first period and tied up the game at 2 when he scored at 3:21 of the second period. Edgewood took their first lead when Porter perfectly set up Carter Rosenberg at 9:00 of the second. It remained 3-2 until midway through the third period when West senior defenseman Teigan Rasmus would strike twice quickly. Rasmus tied it up at 3 with a goal at 8:04 of the third and then gave the Warriors the lead with another goal just 1:36 later.
However, Owen Porter wasn’t done as he completed his hat trick at 10:46 of the third period and tied the game at 4. The players who gave West the quick first period lead would then finish the game strong. DePuydt beat goalie Tate Cagle at 13:19 of the third to give West the lead for good at 5-4. Chase Crass would add the finishing touch with his second goal of the game at 14:18 to finish the scoring. Julian Scalcucci was again strong in goal for West with 32 saves. The loss drops Edgewood to 6-1 on the season. The Warriors are now 9-0 on the season heading into a Wisconsin Valley Conference showdown at unbeatend and #1 ranked Stevens Point on Tuesday. Also Saturday it was the latest renewal of the girls’ hockey rivalry between the Central Wisconsin Storm and Hayward. The final two meetings last season went to overtime, including a thrilling win for the Storm in the sectional final that launched them to the state tournament. It was more of the same on Saturday as three periods and two overtimes of tight hockey ended in a 1-1 tie in a game also heard on 98.9 WXCO.
The Storm stuck first as Isabelle Janke would score a shorthanded goal at 11:50 of the first period to give Central Wisconsin a 1-0 lead. It would stay that way until late in the second period. Hayward would tie the game at 1 with 1:50 left in the period as Zandra Land would score. It would stay that way through a tight third period and two overtimes. After being outshot 31-22 in regulation, Hayward would have an 11-5 edge across the two overtimes. Storm goalie Cami Flohr would make a number of game-saving stops and finished with 32 saves in the game. Hayward goalie Makenna Hutchison stopped 35 shots.
The Storm are now 4-1-1 overall and return to action tonight (Monday) at Black River Falls in a battle for first place in the Wisconsin Valley Conference. The Storm are 1-0 in the league while Black River Falls is 2-0 and 3-1-1 overall. That game will be broadcast live on 98.9 WXCO, online at wxco.fm, mobile devices by searching WXCO and on the Civic Media app starting with the pregame at 6:35 pm and face off at 7.
