Dumping Pets Into Wisconsin Waterways
WAUSAU, Wis (WXCO) – A goldfish was recently found in the wild, so the DNR is reminding us of the risks of diseases these actions pose.
The Wisconsin DNR says do not release pet fish into local waterways.
“People are probably thinking I don’t really want to flush my goldfish or get rid of it, so I’ll just release it into the wild.” explained Erin McFarlane a Statewide Clean Boats, Clean Waters Educator with UWSP. “That goldfish isn’t naturally from Wisconsin. It’s not the best step to take. There are a few different groups that will offer a rehoming service.”
Even a goldfish can introduce new diseases and disrupt the native ecosystem. Snakes known to do the same.
“Care about what’s in the natural environment, whether or not it should be there and how it affects other living things.” said McFarlane.
The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources says if you catch a fish that doesn’t belong to that area, notify the agency immediately with its location.
