Green Bay Art Colony Exhibition at Neville Public Museum

GREEN BAY, WI- (WGBW) – The Neville Public Museum hosts the 110th Green Bay Art Colony Exhibition through March 9th. The Art Colony was founded in 1915 and is the oldest art organization in Green Bay, says Neville Public Museum Director Beth Kowalski.

“The Green Bay Art Colony, which was the Green Bay Art Club, is the origins of the Neville Public Museum,” Kowalski said. “So in 1915, when we started, it was all about the Green Bay Art Colony. It was to bring the world to Green Bay, and they hosted different exhibitions. So it’s been a continuous program, from our old building to our new building. It’s a practicing contemporary group of women. And it’s a phenomenal show.” 

Kowalski said the Art Colony is the oldest art organization in Green Bay. And now there are about 20 artists displayed in the juried competition and exhibit.

“They are local artists. There are about 20 practicing contemporary artists. They can submit a handful of pieces,” Kowalski said. “So I think we ended up with 45 pieces of contemporary art…It’s multimedia. It’s photography. It’s oils. It’s acrylics. It’s sculpture. I think there’s even a fiber piece in there. So it’s one of those things where it’s multi-pieces–multiple perspectives. But they’re all local women.”

Kowalski said the women of the Art Colony continue to inspire each other, educate the public, encourage new artists, and give scholarships to art students. 

Winners of the juried competition

A total of 41 artworks from 23 artists were juried in by Lynn Gilchrist. 

“It was my privilege to jury this year’s Annual Exhibit – especially at its anniversary of 110 years! I see a group of artists who are just as committed as the founding members must have been,” Gilchrist said in a statement.

The winners are as follows:

• 1st Place goes to Barbi Gossen for “Self Portrait” 

• 2nd Place goes to Carrie Dorski for “The Paths I’ve Taken #1”

• 3rd Place goes to Ginny Laukka for “Captured by Color”

• Honorable Mention goes to Karen Kjell for “Banana Comedy”

• Honorable Mention goes to Daniela Kouzov for “Water VIII”

The Neville Public Museum is at 210 Museum Place in Green Bay. Admission to the Neville Public Museum is as follows:

• $12 – Adults
• $10 – Seniors Citizens
• $6 – Youth and Students
• $0 – Military, active and retired.
