MILWAUKEE, Wis. – (WAUK) – After months of debate, Milwaukee Public Schools (MPS) has approved funding to bring school resource officers back to its campuses.

The MPS board voted Thursday night to authorize funds for 25 school resource officers, complying with a court order to have them in place by Feb. 27.

The decision comes after a dispute between the school district and the city over who would foot the bill for the officers. A state law passed in 2023 required MPS to have the officers in schools by Jan. 1, 2024, but the deadline passed without action.

A parent’s lawsuit prompted Milwaukee County Judge David Borowski to set a new deadline and ultimately order the city and district to split the estimated $1.6 million cost.

The officers are expected to be in schools by next Thursday’s deadline.
