MADISON, Wis. (CIVIC MEDIA) – Winter weather is ramping up this week with two shots of snow striking Wisconsin ahead of the weekend, are you ready?

It’s a 1… 2… punch from old man winter this mid-December. A light coating of 0.50″ to 1″ arrives Tuesday. With another 3-6″ of snow surging in and painting the landscape white on Thursday.

It’ll be the first widespread snow storm of the season. With advisories, watches and warnings going out on Wednesday.

Some areas may pick up more, nearing 8″ is possible in some spots.

Make sure the snowblower is ready to go. Experts say check the scraper bar and snowshoes to see if they need to be replaced. Then fire it up. If it doesn’t start, take a closer look. Check the cooling machine, drain the gas, and replace it with a small amount of clean and fresh fuel.

It’s going to be a fluffier, drier type of snowfall for most. With temperatures in the teens to 20s as it’s snowing later this week.

There are 35 different types of snowflakes, which can be further divided into 121 subtypes. But they are categorized into four main types: plates, columns, needles, and dendrites.

The most common type of snowflake is the dendrite, which has a six-sided structure with elaborate and nearly symmetrical branches.

Snowflakes can look similar even though they seem different because certain snowflakes only occur under specific temperatures and humidities.
