A Wisconsin Author’s Love of Books Leads to Writing for Kids 

How does a Wisconsin author choose to write middle-grade fiction? Laura Anne Bird is more than enthusiastic about writing for kids..The Madison-based woman has a love of books and shares her mission to foster a deeper love of literature with Pat Kreitlow, host of UpNorthNews Radio. 

Bird describes herself as a lifelong reader. She credits her early love for books to her parents and the welcoming stacks of the Wauwatosa Public Library.

“Books meant more to me than almost anything,” she says. “My childhood dream was writing stories that could spark joy and wonder for kids.” 

Bird turned her dream into a reality. The mother of three is the author of two acclaimed novels, Crossing the Pressure Line and Marvelous Jack.

These middle-grade novels are aimed at readers aged 8 to 12. The books delve into universal themes like loss, self-discovery, and the courage to embrace change.

“These books resonate with both children and adults,” she explains. “Middle-grade fiction has an eternal, universal quality that speaks to all ages.”

Crossing the Pressure Line tells the story of Claire Birch, a 12-year-old navigating a transformative summer in Wisconsin’s Northwoods while fulfilling a special request from her late grandfather. Her second companion novel is Marvelous Jack. It focuses on a mischievous boy who rediscovers his love for baking after his mother’s passing. Bird’s stories prove even difficult topics can be handled with hope and humor.

But her contributions extend far beyond  writing. As a dedicated advocate for books and literacy, she serves on the boards of the Madison Public Library Foundation and the Wisconsin Book Festival. Bird promotes access to books and amplifies marginalized voices. It’s a mission she believes is more critical than ever in the face of rising book bans.

“Books connect us in profound ways,” she says. “I want to urge all readers to support diverse authors and celebrate stories that challenge perspectives.”
