WAUSAU, Wis. (WXCO) – 8 days before election day and with early voting already underway, Senator Tammy Baldwin was in town on a statewide bus tour.

Baldwin, who is trying to win a third term in the Senate, is in a tight race with Republican Eric Hovde. Baldwin was joined for her Wausau stop by Senator Chris Coons of Delaware. Coons, who succeeded President Joe Biden as one of Delaware’s two Senators, has been in the Senate with Baldwin since she joined the body in January of 2013.

Coons on Baldwin: “She is a hard worker. She’s a fighter. She’s willing to reach across the aisle and solve problems.”

Baldwin spoke to supporters who will be out knocking on doors in what looks to be another close race both at the Presidential level and in her Senate race, “We are the battleground state. Wisconsin will decide which candidate becomes the next President of the United States. We were the tipping point state in ’16. We were the tipping point state in ’20. No pressure!”

Baldwin also focused on differences between her and Eric Hovde on a number of issues. The incumbent Senator said that Hovde is from out of state and is out of touch on the important issues. Baldwin spoke of her opponent wanting to repeal the Affordable Care Act while noting her work writing the portion of the ACA that allows young people to stay on their parent’s health insurance until they turn 26. She also spoke of having a preexisting health condition as a child and not having insurance because of that. Baldwin says the ACA changed that and that we can do big things but not if Eric Hovde is in the Senate.

Baldwin also noted that she feels there are different priorities between her and her Republican opponent on the issue of taxes. Baldwin on taxes, “Eric Hovde favors a $4 Trillion tax giveaway to wealthy people like himself and big corporations. Meanwhile I am fighting to bring down taxes for working people with the Child Tax Credit, Earned Income Tax Credit and ability to put up a down payment for a first home.”

Baldwin warned, that to pay for the tax cut for the wealthy, that Hovde would cut earned benefits, “How would Eric Hovde pay for that $4 Trillion dollar tax cut? By cutting Social Security and Medicare. Making cuts across the board. He calls for the elimination of the Department of Education. He calls for a 1/3 cut in the U.S. Department of Agriculture. The stakes couldn’t be higher.”

The Wausau stop was the 10th over the past three days during a five day bus tour for the Baldwin campaign. When it finishes in Madison at an event featuring Vice President Kamala Harris on Wednesday the tour will have covered more than 1300 miles across Wisconsin.
